Von der Leyen proposes Canada as first EU associated member
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed Thursday in Montreal at the 21st EU-Canada summit that Canada become the first associated member of the European Union. Full membership is impossible due to the country's geographic location. The concept envisions "association without accession" – shared ambition and vision without formal EU entry. This status would be available exclusively to the closest non-European partners.
