EU proposes tripling Frontex, giving it deportation powers outside Europe
The European Commission proposed a reform that would triple Frontex's size and grant the agency unprecedented powers to deport migrants, monitor social media, and respond to mass arrivals at EU borders. Frontex would become the "EU's central actor on returns" and could deport migrants from one non-EU country to another before they reach Europe. The reform responds partly to around 80,000 arrivals in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in July. Critics, including NGOs and MEPs, warn of human rights violations.
