Lagarde resigns as ECB head nearly a year before term ends

Christine Lagarde informed European Council President António Costa that she will step down from her position as president of the European Central Bank on 7 February, nearly a year before the end of her term. A person familiar with her thinking stated anonymously that Lagarde wants "greater freedom to express views and engage on non-monetary matters," as she cannot remain neutral about changes in France and the world. The ECB chief's departure opens the way for package negotiations among EU capitals over at least three positions on the six-member Executive Board.
