Día de Muertos: why Mexicans celebrate death with joy
Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday rooted in the beliefs of the Maya, Mexica and Zapotec peoples that merged with Catholic All Souls' Day after the Spanish arrived. Unlike Polish All Souls' Day, marked by reflection, Mexican celebrations are joyful: families sing, remember loved ones and build ofrendas — altars with photos, candles, food and orange cempasúchil flowers. Guide Dominika Matuszczak, who has lived in Mexico for nearly 10 years, explains that death there is seen as part of life's natural cycle, not a final parting.
