CDC vaccine guidance change risks millions of child HBV infections

The CDC advisory committee proposed in December 2025 to move away from universal newborn vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) immediately after birth. New guidelines would recommend the vaccine at birth only for children of mothers with HBV or unknown serological status. Scientific modeling predicts this change would dramatically increase chronic HBV infections among children and adolescents.
