Kremlin wants NATO pulled back to 1999 borders: stakes bigger than Ukraine
Russia demands withdrawal of NATO military presence to the state before 1999 expansion, when Poland, Czechia, and Hungary joined the alliance. In subsequent years NATO admitted more Central and Eastern European states, and after the invasion of Ukraine also Finland and Sweden. Moscow views the current eastern flank as a threat and makes demilitarization of the region a key condition for talks.
