Neuropsychiatrist: brain filters consciousness, doesn't create it
Neuropsychiatrist Iain McGilchrist claims the brain does not generate consciousness — just as the larynx does not create air but only shapes it into voice. Consciousness would permeate the entire universe, from single-celled organisms to mountains (panpsychism). McGilchrist compares the stable "self" to a whirlpool in a stream — a lasting form in constant flow — and argues that matter is merely a phase of consciousness.
