Forest fires trigger new type of permafrost landslides in Canada

Scientists at the University of Alberta discovered a new kind of landslide in Canada's Northwest Territories — so-called permafrost detachment slides. House-sized blocks of ice detach from ground in areas with thin permafrost, with forest fires being the direct cause through their long-term effects. The phenomenon may be unprecedented over the last 10,000 years and will likely accelerate as climate change progresses.
