Gigantopithecus and human ancestors: conflict or avoidance?

Gigantopithecus, the largest ape in history (about 3 m tall, 230 kg), inhabited forests of Southeast Asia and could have encountered Homo erectus. Scientists note direct evidence of interaction is lacking, but human ancestors — as tool-using and weapon-bearing predators — likely displaced the giant from its habitat. According to paleobiologist Friedemann Schrenk, Gigantopithecus would have tried to avoid hominids, much as orangutans today avoid humans.
