Oil slick off Sochi coast: Russia hid leak for a week
After a Ukrainian attack on the Afromax Rio tanker on October 6, Krasnodar Krai governor Veniamin Kondratyev issued a warning about an oil leak only a week later. Greenpeace independently identified a slick covering 25 km² by October 8. Russian organization Prozrachnyy Mir reported contamination along 70 km of coastline south from Novorossiysk; residents found oil-covered birds. Experts assess the leak is far smaller than the Anapa disaster in December, when over 9,000 tons of fuel oil entered the Black Sea.
