Brain scans may predict depression in teens up to 4 years early
Analysis of nearly 30,000 brain scans of children found that the rate of cerebral cortex maturation can predict depression and anxiety disorders in teenagers up to four years in advance. Scientists focused not on damage to specific circuits, but on the timeline and pace of brain maturation. The discovery points to a significant role for delayed brain plasticity and genetic factors shaped before birth.
