France fires ballistic missile from submarine at Mach 20

France conducted a test launch of a strategic ballistic missile fired from a submarine. The projectile rises into space before returning at speeds around Mach 20 — 20 times the speed of sound. Such systems are designed to remain hidden and never be used in combat, and public demonstrations of them are rare.
