Amazon invests over $1 billion in 12 nuclear reactors in Indiana

Amazon plans to purchase energy from 12 small modular reactors built by X-energy, to be constructed on the site of a former coal power plant in Sullivan County, Indiana. The installation will have a total capacity of 960 megawatts, with each Xe-100 reactor generating 80 MW and cooled by helium using TRISO fuel. Amazon led a $700 million funding round for X-energy in 2024, and the company's total commitment to nuclear energy is estimated at over $1 billion. The construction and launch timeline for the reactors remains uncertain — the US does not yet have a functioning commercial SMR.
