Scientists propose new depression subtype linked to circadian rhythm

Researchers from the University of Sydney analyzed data from 11,380 adults and identified a group of approximately 2,600 people whose depression is associated with disrupted circadian rhythm. People with this subtype sleep excessively, wake fatigued, are night owls, and experience seasonal mood swings. The subtype may affect about 1 in 4 people with severe, recurrent depression. Researchers suggest standard antidepressants may be insufficient for them, with melatonin or light therapy being more effective.
