Scientists create new phase of water: solid oxygen, liquid hydrogen
Researchers from the French Atomic Energy Commission achieved a completely new state of water in the laboratory, existing under extreme pressure and at temperatures of thousands of degrees Celsius. In this phase the oxygen skeleton is ordered as in a solid, while hydrogen atoms move freely through it as in a liquid. Water's chemical composition remains unchanged — it is H₂O in a completely different state of matter.
