Europe backs Ukraine, but cracks emerge: elections, finances, military limits
Europe has spent 236 billion euros on Ukraine since through April — more than twice the US contribution of 115 billion euros — yet this solidarity has limits. Ukraine remains dependent on the US in critical areas: intelligence, Patriot systems, and Starlink access, which Zelensky says the Trump administration deliberately restricted. Upcoming elections in several EU states, financial strains, and Europe's inability to replace Washington's military dominance create risk of fractures in the European coalition before the war's fifth winter.
