Myanmar earthquake may help predict California's "Big One"

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck near Mandalay, Myanmar on 28 March 2025 and killed at least 3700 people may help scientists better forecast the impact of a potential "Big One" on the San Andreas Fault in California. Research using satellite data and unique ground rupture footage revealed the fault had a twisted, nearly spiral shape that amplified the shaking. Results were published on 14 October in Nature.
