Data of 17 million California students stolen in school system breach

Hackers stole sensitive data on approximately 17 million students from California public schools, including names, surnames, home addresses, birthdates and Social Security numbers. The breach occurred in an SFTP system used by Educational Testing Service (ETS), a partner of California's Department of Education. Attackers gained access to files repeatedly over four months, with the leak likely caused by simple password theft.
