EU updates Arctic strategy with security as top priority
The European Union has presented a new Arctic strategy placing security concerns front and center for the first time. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas pointed to Russia's military expansion — including reactivation of Soviet bases — and China's growing ambitions in the region. The EU plans to expand its icebreaker fleet, deploy a satellite surveillance system, and establish a maritime security center with partners, with NATO cooperation enabling rapid troop deployment in the Arctic.
