Testosterone for menopause: growing popularity without FDA approval

Increasing numbers of doctors are prescribing testosterone to menopausal women despite the FDA not approving the hormone as a therapy for this group. A 2026 study found over 90,000 such off-label prescriptions in 2025, a 58.7% increase compared to 2024. The prescriptions chiefly concern women aged 45–64. Scientists warn that scientific evidence supporting testosterone's effectiveness in treating menopause is considerably weaker than for other hormone therapies approved by the FDA.
