APOE4 gene variant triples Alzheimer's risk through brain fat buildup

MIT researchers have determined that the APOE4 gene variant — which increases Alzheimer's disease risk 3–12-fold — disrupts fat transport in brain cells, leading to pathological accumulation. Until now, research has focused on amyloid-beta and tau proteins; lipids now gain status as a third key factor. The discovery opens a new potential treatment direction based on regulating fat metabolism in the brain.
