Leap seconds ending in 2027 as timekeeping rules change

Starting May 20, 2027, leap seconds will be eliminated following a decision by the XXVIII General Conference on Weights and Measures in Versailles on October 15. Leap seconds have been added every few years since 1972 to synchronize Earth's slowing rotation with precise atomic clocks, occasionally making the last minute of June or December last 61 seconds. Polish experts contributed to the change.
