NATO sets 2029 defense targets amid threat of Russian attack

NATO is beginning negotiations on the forces and weapons needed to defend against Russian attack, with a target completion date of 2029. European officials warn that this is when Russia may be ready to strike a member state. This is complicated by possible reductions in U.S. troop presence in Europe, which risks gaps in aerial refueling aircraft, long-range missiles, and reconnaissance systems. Each of the 32 member states must specify concrete forces and equipment.
