Rice University scientists discover new quantum state in ytterbium compound

Scientists at Rice University observed an unusual magnetic state in the ytterbium compound YbMnBi₂, where atomic spins favor a particular direction but do not form an ordered magnet. The phenomenon may explain the material's unconventional electrical and thermal properties. Results were published in Physical Review X.
