Leap seconds disappear from UTC starting May 20, 2027

An unprecedented decision has been made to eliminate leap seconds from UTC — the change takes effect May 20, 2027, earlier than previously expected. The goal is to reduce the risk of computer synchronization errors that could arise especially during the first instance in history of subtracting a second rather than adding one.
