California redwoods slow photosynthesis during heat waves

New research published in JGR Biogeosciences shows that California redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) reduce photosynthesis when temperature exceeds 37°C. This is troubling news for climate, as redwood forests rank among Earth's largest atmospheric carbon absorbers. These trees' range has already shrunk significantly in recent decades, and increasingly frequent heat waves may deepen the problem.
