Malware preinstalled at factory on cheap Android smartphones
Researchers at Bitdefender discovered the Midnight Mimosa campaign — thousands of cheap Android smartphones reached users with malware installed at the factory. The malware, hidden in device firmware at system level, displayed ads, generated fake clicks and created botnets. It primarily affects cheap phones with MediaTek processors sold under lesser-known brands or as counterfeits of popular models. Standard removal methods don't help — the malicious code is present before the phone's first startup.
