Danger Islands penguins died of cholera, not avian flu
Thousands of dead birds were found in March 2024 on the Danger Islands archipelago off Antarctica, where over 1.2 million pairs of chinstrap penguins nest. Research showed cholera, not avian flu, caused the mass die-off. The archipelago is exceptionally important for the species — it hosts 55% of the Antarctic Peninsula population and surrounding areas.
