Prima implant restores sight in age-related macular degeneration patients

The Prima system, developed by California-based Science Corporation, combines a retinal implant with glasses equipped with a camera and restores partial vision to patients with advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD affects over 5 million people worldwide and until now had no effective treatment. The device was approved in Europe in July and is awaiting FDA approval in the USA; over 80% of patients after training could read, solve crosswords and use a phone.
