Margaret Hamilton, Apollo 11 programmer and software engineering pioneer, dies
Margaret Hamilton, the American computer scientist who wrote the onboard code for Apollo 11, has died. Her software enabled the safe lunar landing — the program detected computer overload and prioritized critical landing procedures. Hamilton was the first to use the term "software engineering," giving the emerging field equal standing with traditional engineering. An obituary appeared in Nature.
