Neanderthal from Shanidar Cave killed by spear thrust to heart, researchers find

Archaeologists from Cambridge University analyzed the bones of a Neanderthal called Shanidar A, who lived approximately 75,000 years ago and was buried in Shanidar Cave in Iraq. A hole matching a wooden spear was found in the shoulder blade, having pierced the chest. According to study author Emma Pomeroy, the wound's location and the force required to inflict it indicate an intentional thrust to the heart. Results were published in Scientific Reports.
