Ancient DNA from Montreal: French and Indigenous people did not interbreed genetically

DNA testing of skeletons buried at Notre-Dame cemetery in Montreal showed no trace of genetic mixing between French colonists and Indigenous peoples in the 17th–18th centuries. Study author Diane Martin-Moya from Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières says that popular family stories about Indigenous ancestors are common in Quebec but DNA tests do not confirm them. Results were published October 5 in PNAS. False claims to Indigenous identity may, according to the researcher, undermine the rights and resources of authentic Indigenous nations.
