Ames Crater is 100 million years younger: coincided with mass extinction

Ames Crater in northern Oklahoma, the fourth-largest impact crater in the USA (about 16 km in diameter), is approximately 100 million years younger than previously thought. New research indicates that an asteroid impact the size of the Eiffel Tower coincided in time with one of Earth's largest mass extinctions and may have contributed to it. The crater was discovered only in 1991 during oil drilling — it is completely hidden beneath layers of marine sediment.
