Over 300 whale calves dead in Patagonia: all-time record

Since June, more than 300 southern right whale calves (Eubalaena australis) have died in Argentine Patagonia, far exceeding the previous annual record of 113 deaths in 2012. The bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was detected in the carcasses, first identified in this species in 2013. Scientists are trying to determine what triggered the infection at this unprecedented scale.
