Why do airplane cabin lights dim during takeoff and landing?
Dimming cabin lights during nighttime takeoffs and landings serves a safety purpose, not a relaxation one. It allows passengers and crew to adapt their vision to darkness — in case of emergency evacuation, their eyes would already be accustomed to external conditions. The calmer atmosphere conducive to sleep is only a side effect of this procedure.
