Unknown Roman city discovered in Austria: had amphitheater for 8,000
Geophysical surveys near St. Pantaleon-Erla in Lower Austria have revealed a previously unknown Roman city on the Danube limes. The carefully planned settlement covered 25–30 hectares and possessed an amphitheater for approximately 8,000 spectators. Scholars consider it exceptional that such a large city arose beside a fort garrisoning only 500 soldiers—it may have been mentioned by Claudius Ptolemaeus.
