After 80 years, scientists discover how fungi produce penicillin

Researchers have finally determined the mechanism by which nature creates the characteristic structure of beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillin. The research took 80 years since scientists at Oxford University made penicillin the first mass-produced antibiotic. Beta-lactam antibiotics have been among the most important drugs against bacterial infections since the late 1930s.
