Medicine Nobel for optogenetics: how light controls nerve cells
This year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries underlying optogenetics. This technique allows individual neurons to be switched on and off using light, thanks to a protein derived from single-celled algae. Prof. Magdalena Dziembowska from the University of Warsaw explains that the method has opened new possibilities for studying the brain, though many of its secrets remain unsolved.
