The fake plebiscite that made Maximilian of Habsburg emperor of Mexico

In 1863, Ferdinand Maximilian of Habsburg agreed to accept the Mexican throne on the condition that a majority of Mexicans consent. The French organized a plebiscite whose result the military "guaranteed" — Maximilian did not know the vote was rigged. He paid the highest price for this fraud.
