Homo erectus existed 200,000 years earlier than believed: discovery from South Africa
Scientists described 18 hominid fossils from Drimolen Cave in South Africa, including a skull fragment of an adult Homo erectus dated to approximately 2 million years ago. This evidence shows the species appeared in southern Africa roughly 200,000 years earlier than previously thought. Alongside Homo erectus lived Paranthropus robustus, in which scientists found gradual evolution toward larger teeth and stronger jaw muscles as climate changed.
