Microorganism from Oxford breaks fundamental rule of genetic code
Scientists accidentally discovered a previously unknown protist collected from a pond at Oxford University that breaks a rule considered nearly universal in biology. The organism uses two stop signals — which normally end a gene — to encode two completely different amino acids. The discovery is particularly striking because these signals were thought to evolve together and unable to serve other functions.
