Nobel Chemistry Prize awarded to Kagan and Soai for asymmetric synthesis

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Henri B. Kagan from Université Paris-Sud and Kenso Soai from Tokyo University of Science — half each. The honour recognizes their discovery of nonlinear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis. Their work helped explain why life prefers one of two mirror-image versions of molecules — one of chemistry's fundamental problems. The laureates receive 12 million Swedish kronor (over 1 million euros), a gold medal and a diploma.
