El Niño brings rare flowering to Chile's Atacama Desert

Exceptionally strong El Niño brought rain to the Atacama Desert in Chile, triggering a rare "desierto florido" phenomenon. Millions of seeds and bulbs dormant underground for years awakened and covered hillsides with carpets of purple, pink, white, red and yellow flowers. According to Jorge Carabantes of CONAF, over 200 plant species are blooming — an exceptional and remarkable event.
