Australia: Supreme Court blocks coal mine expansion over climate
Australia's Supreme Court upheld a NSW Court of Appeal ruling that invalidated MACH Energy's plans to expand the Mount Pleasant coal mine in Muswellbrook in the Hunter Valley. The case, brought by a local residents' group, is Australia's first instance of the Supreme Court considering climate change. The ruling is regarded as binding national precedent for fuel projects in New South Wales. Activists stress that coal extraction cannot be separated from its climate consequences.
