Poorly studied Antarctic basin may pose serious threat to sea levels
The Wilkes subglacial basin in Antarctica, poorly studied until now, contains enough ice to raise the global average sea level by 3 to 4 meters. Scientists warn that destabilization of this area could have catastrophic consequences for coastal regions worldwide. Lack of detailed mapping makes it difficult to precisely assess the risk and pace of potential melting.
