New study challenges theory on life's origins at hydrothermal vents

The dominant theory for the past decade holds that the first organisms arose at alkaline hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. New work by Benjamin Tutolo from the University of Calgary, published in PNAS, questions this view—arguing that conditions in these environments may not have favored the formation of key biomolecules. The discovery matters for the search for life on other planets.
