Mayan funerary urn with jaguar and skulls from 1,400 years ago enters museum

A ceramic Mayan funerary urn from around 600–900 CE depicts a person in jaguar costume surrounded by human skulls entering the underworld. The vessel, 44.5 cm high, likely comes from Guatemala and was made by the K'iche' Maya people. The urn arrived as an anonymous gift to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore in 2008; it originally held the bones of an ancestor venerated by descendants.
