Nobel Prize in medicine for Deisseroth, Hegemann and Nagel for optogenetics

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning light-sensitive ion channels and development of optogenetics — a method allowing nerve cells to be controlled with light. The Nobel Committee stressed that the laureates "laid the foundation for a new era" in brain research and treatment of neurological diseases.
