E-cadherin protein engulfs dead cells, does more than just bind them

Scientists discovered that E-cadherin — the protein that connects cells and tissues — has a second, surprising function: it helps epithelial cells engulf dead neighboring cells. Research on living zebra fish and mouse embryos showed that cells can change the shape of their lower surface to absorb cell debris while maintaining the integrity of protective barriers.
