SMILE mission photographs northern lights in ultraviolet
The Europe-China SMILE probe (Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer) has entered its science phase and captured a complete ring of the northern aurora around the pole in ultraviolet light for the first time in a year. The onboard UVI instrument produced exceptional images showing Earth resembling the Death Star. These are groundbreaking data for magnetosphere and ionosphere researchers.
